An early Victorian devotional plaque, for a dresser or mantle place, this exquisite, hand painted and pencil signed piece would make a wonderful addition to any fine art collection. Painted with an exquisitely delicate hand, this porcelain plaque is of the highest quality we were able to find in this size. After hours of research, we were hard pressed to find a better quality artist's rendering of this iconic image of Christ Crowned with Thorns. The original oil on board painting was done by Guido Reni, a follower of the Caracci style. Reni was a prolific Baroque Painter who later developed an understanding of chiaroscuro (harsh lighting) that is reminiscent of the Caravaggisti method. Reni's original, of which he made many copies, was completed in 1620. This painting of the Passion was re-imagined and reproduced throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, becoming one of the most important ecclesiastic images by the nineteenth century. The artist who rendered it here lived up to the portrait's rich history in the fine detailing of the beard, excellent light reflection of the eyes, and stunning delicacy in the hair. A superb antique, fit for the highest collection! Marks: Illegible pencil signature, incised 15 on the back of the plate. Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks, restoration or even paint flakes. The original purple velvet frame stands on its own. Measurements: 5.75" tall with frame 3.75" tall without frame
