In the late 1800s in Europe and the US there was much interest in the people and customs of the Far East. Simon & Halbig of Germany produced several "Oriental" doll molds to represent the Asian populations and introduce them to children who did not necessarily have access to long distance travel. In those days, information was not as readily available as today with the advent of the Internet. So people relied on books, newspapers and obtained most of their information on the foreign cultures from periodicals like "The Youth's Companion" and "Harper's Bazaar."
This absolutely lovely doll by Simon & Halbig is one such ambassador. And though she did not come directly from China, she certainly captures the essence and sensibility of an exotic culture as experienced by the Western World. Even today, unless you seek out the information you may find yourself missing out! The 1129 has a charming and unique face; the eye cuts are not as elongated as the 1199, but are still stylistically exaggerated for a truly adorable and engaging presentation. The other molds for Asian features by Simon and Halbig are the more common 1329, the rare 1199, and the super rare 1099.
This girl is dressed in a Western fashion, which retains elements of her Eastern heritage in the cloth pattern and her accessories. She also comes with her original Chinese costume, perfect for visiting her relatives overseas, or celebrating traditional holidays in style!

She has an amber-tinted bisque socket head, with dark brown glass eyes set in exaggeratedly almond-shaped eye cuts, painted upper and lower lashes, feathered black brows, an open mouth with four upper teeth, and pierced ears. She wears a dark brown mohair wig, styled in short curls, and her original black human hair wig, styled in a massive sculptured bun. She stands at 21” on her original amber-toned fully jointed wood and composition body.
She wears an antique off-white cotton dress, with a printed black pattern of flowers in circles, surrounded by a squiggly pattern in pointillism, with white eyelet lace at the cuffs and collar, white silk plackets down the bodice, tucks at the skirt, and a blue, black, and tan striped grosgrain sash at the waist. Underneath, she wears a white cotton full slip with lace trim, and her original off-white silk pantaloons with blue and green embroidered trim. On her feet are a pair of antique white knit socks and antique black oilcloth shoes with silvertone buckles. In her hair are silk flowers in pale peach and dark blue, and in her ears are a pair of earrings with blue heart-shaped and round coral glass beads.
Her original outfit is a matching dress and jacket set in tan silk brocade, trimmed with pink-edged brocade ribbon. The jacket is in the typical Chinese style, with a mandarin collar and decorative frog closure in a flower pattern with metallic gold threads, lined with pale blue satin with a ribbon tie on the inside. The dress has an off-white silk bodice and attached slip, with shoulder straps, a pale blue ribbon sewn to the front, and blue and green embroidered trim; her original pantaloons match, being made of off-white silk with blue and green embroidered trim. Her original wig has a flat red bow at the back, and looks very nice with the pale peach and dark blue silk flowers.
Marks: SH 1199 / DEP / 9
Condition: Excellent. Her head is free of hairlines, cracks, chips, or restoration. She has very nice modeling representing a Chinese child with expert painting of features, subtle colors and smooth surfaces. The eyes were once sleep eyes, but have since been set; they are aligned well in the head. Her original body retains most of its original finish, with some areas of expected age wear and paint chipping. Her original costume is in excellent condition. Her Western-style dress has uneven tucks, slight discoloration, and fraying of the silk decoration and the shoes have some wear and a replaced buckle; these do not diminish the beauty of the costume. Her original wig is full, and has kept its shape well, barring a few flyaway hairs. This is a desirable and rarer mold so with presentation like this, I’m sure to mark her sale pending soon!
