This charismatic young lady will immediately command the crown in any situation. She is self-assured and completely self-reliant! Charles Dana Gibson's unique personification of the "feminine ideal" in his charming "Gibson Girl" illustrations spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering a fresh take on feminine appeal and beauty. (See copies of original Gibson illustrations at the end of the photos I have posted). Gibson's rendering of these lovely ladies incorporated long, slender waist and necks, as well as limbs, coupled with a modest bosom and full hips; these combined to make a refined female figure. The Gibson girl was stylish and respectable, beautiful yet reserved, and a perfect example of the emerging lady of the dawn of the 20th century. A fine and statuesque version of the modern suffragette of her day!
It was no surprise, then, when the German firm, Kestner, the so-called "King of Dollmakers," chose to immortalize even further this iconic character into their very own bisque-headed doll. Originally manufactured with design input from Charles Dana Gibson himself, these dolls have been treasured by collectors for years. Their smooth bisque heads are expertly-modeled with long, slender necks, with pointed and angular features, and set atop top-quality kidskin bodies with bisque lower arms, topped off with pompadour-styled wigs. Considered by their creator to be the "standard" for feminine beauty, the Gibson girl could now be found in dolls shops, adorned in beautiful, stylish costumes and dresses, soon to be found within the collection cabinets and within the arms of eager young girls offering them a role model in miniature form.

She has a bisque shoulder head molded in the classic Gibson Girl style, with an upturned face and angular features. She has her original blue glass sleep eyes, fine raised and arched light brown brows, a dainty pointed nose, a serenely smiling closed mouth, and blushed cheeks. She stands at 19.5” on her original pin-jointed kidskin body, with bisque lower arms, and wears an antique mohair wig in the typical “cottage loaf” style.
She wears her original white cotton blouse, with a jacquard pattern of butterflies and lace-like stripes, with an added antique black bar pin with a tiny faux pearl, and black trim at the cuffs, and a long black silk skirt with a subtle jacquard paisley pattern, printed white pinstripes, and a finely pleated hem. Underneath, she wears two antique white cotton half slips, both trimmed with handmade crochet lace, and a pair of antique white cotton pantaloons. On her feet are her original black knit socks, and a pair of antique tan leather boots, with white silk trim. Finishing off the ensemble is a fabulous large black straw hat, copiously decorated with silk flowers, rhinestones, a black braid bow, and a bright pink faux bird made of feathers; she also carries a pale mauve handbag with metallic silver lace overlay and a silvertone chain strap.
MARKS: 172. / 7. [incised, back of head]
Made in Germany [written in pencil on the back of the shoulder plate; this is likely incised on the plate under the kidskin]
CONDITION: Exquisite! This girl is in amazing condition; the bisque head is free of hairlines, cracks, chips, or restoration, and features beautiful and careful facial modeling and painting of features; there is a minor rub to one of the cheeks. The bisque hands have a couple minor inherent marks, but are likewise free of hairlines, cracks, chips, or restoration, but they are antique replacements and are not original to the body. Her glass eyes are sparkling and sit well in the head, and sleep well. The kidskin body has some repair to the left shoulder and side of the torso. The rest of the body has typical age wear, and the joints are slightly loose. The costume is in great condition; the blouse has a couple moth holes and the pinstripes on the skirt have faded in places. The undergarments have age-related discoloration, and the white silk trim on the boots has melted but they are otherwise sturdy. Overall, this is a beautiful lady, and one that every serious doll collection must include!
