Unquestionably the most sought-after Bleuette is the elusive and most beautiful of all is the wonderful Premiere Bleuette! She stands at the classic Bleuette 10 3/4” tall, a great cabinet size, with a molded and painted bisque Jumeau head, and clad in a sweet antique costume. She’s in very good overall condition, and would make a fabulous addition to any collection! The Bleuette is a classic French doll, and a desirable Premiere won’t be here long! Snatch her up now!

The Bleuette doll was available through the French girls’ magazine Semaine de Suzette, which ran from 1905-1960. Included in the magazine were clothing patterns specifically for the Bleuette dolls, intended to teach young girls sewing and dressmaking. Bleuette dolls were made by the French doll firm SFBJ for the magazine. The Premiere Bleuette is especially rare and desirable, as she was an extra gift for those who pre-ordered a year’s subscription to Semaine de Suzette before the launch of the first issue in February 1905, and for one month afterward to March 1905. Wildly popular from the start, 20,000 Premier dolls with Jumeau heads were ordered from SFBJ, and a different mold was used to fill the remaining 40,000 subscriptions the magazine received for the promotion.

She has a bisque socket head, with painted and molded features, blue paperweight eyes, painted upper and lower lashes, thick brown feathered brows, an open mouth with four upper teeth, and pierced ears. She stands at 10 ¾” tall on her original fully-jointed wood and composition body, and wears a gorgeous auburn-brown modern mohair wig, styled in curls with braids across the crown.

She is dressed in a sweet antique cotton dress, designed to resemble a pinafore over a blouse. The “blouse” is white cotton, with tucks and a scalloped collar. The rest of the dress is in a pale peachy tan cotton, with a pink leaf motif, a low scooped neckline for the pinafore detailing, and pink ribbon at the “neckline” with bows at the shoulders, around the waist as a sash, and in two stripes above the hem. Underneath, she wears an antique white cotton chemise with white lace long sleeves visible under her sleeveless dress, a lace-trimmed collar, and a chevron of braiding across the front; and a pair of white cotton pantaloons with a windowpane check pattern and lace trim. On her feet are a pair of antique and possibly original tan leather shoes with silk flowers at the toes.

MARKS: 2 [back of head, incised]
Checkmarks, tick-marks, and Xs [written, back of head]

CONDITION: Generally excellent. The bisque head is free of any hairlines, cracks, chips, or restoration. The glass eyes are aligned well in the head. The bisque face does have a few minor rubs, particularly to the cheeks. The body has some retouch to the belly, and the hands have been repainted. The costume is good, with some wear and patching to the skirt; the underwear and shoes may be original and the shoes have repairs to the straps and heel seams, the dress and wig are not original. The wig is soft and supple modern mohair. Overall, this beautiful little girl would make a great addition to your cabinet collection!

*Please note that the price shown for this doll was calculated by factoring in the doll’s condition carefully. The doll’s condition is described fully in the "Condition" paragraph above. Any damage or flaws are carefully evaluated as to the manner in which they may reduce the retail value of this item. Unless there is some major issue we overlooked in the condition report, we decline to entertain any proposals for price reductions due to a less than perfect condition report. Most dolls that are over 100 years old will have encountered issues over the years and perfection is rare when it comes to antiques.
