Little ones can be whirlwinds of emotion, going from floods of tears to radiant joy in a second. And this spectacular Bartenstein girl is no exception! She has one crying face and one smiling face, on the front and back of her head. Both are so expressive, the crying face screwed up in a wail and the smiling face radiating serene peace with sparkling blue paperweight eyes. Adorable auburn braids frame her face, tied with blue bows complementing her antique blue dress. How she must have delighted some little miss- a doll with emotions, sometimes happy, other times sad! And now, she can be yours.
One of the most outstanding dolls we have ever had, this adorably cute and rare petite fille is a very special child made by Fritz Bartenstein. The two-faced style of doll with a pull string in the torso to turn the head and simultaneously trigger a crier mechanism was patented by Bartenstein in 1880. His company soon became known for making such dolls, with a variety of alternating faces, with heads made of wax, composition, or as in the case with this girl, bisque. We are sure that she will not be here long, so if you've been waiting for one of these beauties, it is time to strike while the iron is hot and grab her before someone else takes her home!
***This beautiful girl is available on layaway! Give us a call anytime at 718.859.0901 to hear an in hand description of her excellent condition, or you'd like to discuss layaway terms.**
She has a double-sided solid dome bisque head, with one side molded into a serene face with blue glass set eyes, an open-closed mouth with molded teeth, and arched brows, and the other with a crying face with blue glass set eyes, an open-closed screaming mouth, expressive brows, and a rosy complexion. The head is set on a composition plate, with an attached composition or metal hood, which the auburn human hair wig, styled in two braids, is attached to. She stands at 15” on a body with a cardboard body housing pull strings that facilitate the turning of the head, with composition hands and lower legs, with cloth upper legs.
She is dressed in an antique blue cotton dress, printed with a beige floral pattern, with off-white lace at the collar and waist. Underneath, she wears a pair of lace-trimmed antique white pantaloons, along with a pair of white knit pantaloons which are sewn to her body. On her feet are a pair of cream-colored knit socks and modern-made leather shoes. Her human hair braids are tied with blue ribbons, and on her head is a vintage hand-crocheted tan hat, with silk flowers and a mauve ribbon, tied in a long bow.
Marks: [None visible]
Condition: The bisque head is free of cracks, chips, restoration, or hairlines, though the composition plate has been repaired and repainted, most prominently at the front, and at the neckline on the back. The bisque is of fine quality with expert decoration of features, talented modeling of both character faces. The left upper arm has been re-covered with fabric, and the body under the attached pantaloons has not been able to be examined. The rest of the body is in great condition, and the pull cords work well. The costume is in excellent condition, with minor and expected age wear.
