In the late 1800s in Europe and the US there was much interest in the people and customs of the Far East. Simon & Halbig of Germany produced several "Oriental" doll molds to represent the Asian populations. In those days, information was not as readily available as today with the advent of the Internet. So people relied on books, newspapers and obtained most of their information on the foreign cultures from periodicals like "The Youth's Companion" and "Harper's Bazaar."
This absolutely lovely doll by Simon & Halbig in the 1329 mold is one such ambassador. And though she did not come directly from Japan, she certainly captures the essence and sensibility of an exotic culture as experienced by the Western World. This girl is dressed in her wonderful original costume, depicting her as a Japanese child in a lovely light tan kimono with sunny yellow accents. This little darling is in excellent condition, with her original mohair wig.

She stands at 18” on her original, fully-jointed wood and composition body. Her original black mohair wig is styled up in a bun.
She wears a darling kimono costume in light tan, with a faded floral motif, featuring bright sunny yellow edging on the sleeves and at the collar, with a matching sunny yellow obi sash with a pink stripe through the middle. Underneath, she wears a pair of antique white cotton pantaloons. On her feet, she wears a pair of white stockings and grey and black two-toned slippers. In her hair, she wears pink and yellow silk flowers and a gold-tone hair clip with a central round blue stone, and in her ears she wears simple earrings with round orange glass beads.
