It's not unexpected that the Queen Louise doll could be found in many homes of young Victorian girls back in the day; the pleasant dolly expression, the simple yet familiar "look", all combine to make these girls one of the most recognizable by the German manufacturer. Manufactured in Germany circa 1900 and attributed to Armand Marseille, she is a sweet bisque girl modeled after the beloved Queen Louise. Such gorgeous girls from Armand Marseille are in many ways the "go-to" when it comes to portraying antique bisque dollies in movies and film, as well! This girl is particularly precious, in a plaid wool dress perfect for her first day of school and the fall season! With such a lovely presentation, this girl surely won’t last long! Snatch her up before she’s gone!
DID YOU KNOW: Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Luise Auguste Wilhelmine Amalie; 10 March 1776 – 19 July 1810) was Queen Consort of Prussia as the wife of King Frederick William III. The couple's happy, though short-lived, marriage produced nine children, including the future monarchs Frederick William IV of PRUSSIA and German Emporer William I. Her legacy became cemented after her extraordinary 1807 meeting with French Emperor Napoleon I at Tilst – she met with the emperor to plead unsuccessfully for favorable terms after Prussia's disastrous losses in the Napoleonic Wars. She was already well loved by her subjects, but her meeting with Napoleon led Louise to become revered as "the soul of national virtue". Her early death at the age of thirty-four "preserved her youth in the memory of posterity", and caused Napoleon to reportedly remark the king "has lost his best minister". What a wonderful piece of doll history! The final image in our gallery of photos depicts the portrait of the famous Queen Louise.
This girl has a lovely bisque socket head with big almond-shaped blue sleep eyes, painted lower lashes and real upper lashes, brown feathered brows, an open mouth with four upper teeth, and a slightly dimpled chin. She stands at 24” on a fully-jointed wood and composition body, and wears a soft blond mohair wig in a short, curly style.
She is dressed in a red, navy blue, and green wool plaid dress, with a pleated skirt and bodice. The dress features stripes of thin white ribbon: a single stripe at the collar, doubled at the sleeves and hem, and doubled in a chevron at the bodice. The same ribbon is used as a sash at the waist, and tied in a bow with several loops. Underneath, she wears a white cotton full slip with lace trim, and a pair of white cotton pantaloons trimmed with eyelet lace. On her feet are a pair of black knit socks and red oilcloth shoes. In her hair is a red silk bow.
MARKS: Queen Louise / 100 / Germany
CONDITION: Excellent. The bisque head is free of chips, cracks, hairlines, and restoration, and features excellent quality pale bisque with pleasant coloring, expert painting of features, and crisp modeling of her desirable face. Her lashes have been trimmed short, and some are missing. The body retains much of its original shiny finish, with minor and expected age wear, especially at the joints, and a minor touchup at the neck. Her costume is in excellent condition. Overall, a sweet Queen Louise!
