In 1899, the Jumeau firm absorbed many of the French doll manufacturers of the day and formed the SFBJ company. The SFBJ sought to compete with the German manufacturers. By 1910, the Germans cornered the market by producing varied character dolls that became very popular with the American market. This wonderful character doll was the SFBJ answer to the German character movement of the 1910s that was sweeping the doll world. SFBJ designed their own characters in the 200 series dolls and also modified their doll bodies to represent babies and toddlers. Thus the SFBJ 251 became a really desirable character toddler, with her full cheeks and expressive open mouth revealing a cute moveable tongue; she captured the hearts of so many doll lovers. Today, she is the prize of any doll collection that specializes in French character dolls. Dressed in a cute red and white cotton toddler dress and a wonderful homespun wool sweater with masterful embroidery, she is bound to touch your heart as well!
She has beautiful, warm and rosy bisque and very attractive original blue sleep eyes that the Jumeau eyes are famous for. Her lovely French honey blond wig with curls and bangs frames her face perfectly! The brows are multi-stroked and feathered and her closed open mouth has two upper molded teeth and a moving retractable tongue.
Wearing her lovely antique costumed described above and underneath is an antique high half slip a plus a pair of antique pantaloons, antique cream net stockings, and wonderful antique style Jumeau tan shoes with brown contrast stitching and silk rosettes. Atop her head is an outstanding baby bonnet in cream velvet with lace trim and red ribbons and bows. Just a stunning presentation of a fashionable French toddler bebe of the era!
