In the 1870s, French doll makers offered the novel figure that represented a child doll. Prior to the introduction of the bébé, most dolls looked like adults. Usually made of bisque-or tinted, unglazed porcelain-these child dolls appealed to the parents of a growing middle class who saw their own children in the adorable, romanticized faces of these new dolls. Doll makers dressed their little bébés in clothing modeled after the latest in children's fashions.

The French bebe dolls remained popular for about 30 years. In the last years of the 19th century, German doll makers produced their own high-quality child dolls and sold them for less than the French models, essentially driving the French companies from the market except for the SFBJ which was, in effect, infiltrated by the German Manufacturers. This happened because, in 1899, Fleischmann & Bloedel (a German firm from Sonneberg Germany, with offices in Germany, London, Paris and Spain), joined the alliance of French dolls makers S.F.B.J. with Salomon Fleischmann as it's first director.

This darling Fleischmann is one such beauty!! Made in France but by a company now in German hands, this lovely French bebe that you will absolutely fall in love with, look no further. I mean, did you see those beautiful big blue eyes and her wonderful dark mohair wig in the loose flottante style? And best of all she comes on her original French fully jointed composition and wood body! Don't stall, get her while she is still available!

~If you would like to be the lucky one for whom she has been marked 'Sale Pending', but don't have all of the funds for her immediately, that is alright because you can take advantage of our liberal 8 month layaway plan!
