The German firm of Bahr & Proschild is a highly underrated doll manufacturer from the late 19th century. Not at all as prolific in the volume of dolls they produced as compared to Simon & Halbig or Kestner, this firm nevertheless excelled in producing high quality dolls of superior craftsmanship. The pinnacle of their doll production was with the bisque heads of the 200 series dolls, the most popular of which were the 224 molds. However B & P made many other 200 series molds that are not frequently found and some of which are quite rare indeed. In my years of dealing in antique dolls, I had the privilege of knowing the foremost collector of B & P dolls who only sought the very best and rarest dolls from this firm.

Indeed, she was working on writing a book about the Bahr & Proschild 200 series dolls. Sadly, she was not able to realize this dream. I now have the honor of offering this very rare 275 B & P doll from her personal collection. I can say with great confidence that she would have valued this doll at $1800. I will be offering many more of her dolls as well, but note that once they are sold, there will be very few more found in the market. She spent the better part of the last quarter of a century amassing this collection and so many of these dolls are so very rare, but as the book was never written, we do not know how rare they are.

The Bahr & Proschild 275 DEP is a highly-desirable and rare antique doll. One of the coveted 200 series Bahr & Proschild mold, the 275 is found very infrequently! And this beauty boasts great condition and a stunning antique white cotton gown to boot! She has deep, soulful brown sleep eyes, with a top-quality modeled bisque socket head having slight character features, all on a fully-jointed body standing at 25” tall. Her long tail brown mohair wig compliments her pale complexion yet goes well with her dark eyes and shiny brown brows.

She has a bisque socket head, with painted and molded features: original brown sleep eyes, feathered brown brows, an open mouth with four upper teeth, and pierced ears with earrings long milk glass teardrop earrings. She’s on a fully-jointed wood and composition body with a “Schutsmark” one her upper rear torso. She wears a chocolate curly mohair wig with extensions.

She is dressed in a long antique white cotton dress with vertical openwork insertion trim on the upper bodice with ruffled shoulder wings, puffy long sleeves, gathered at the natural waist with a pink rayon sash and bow tied at the side and a matching fancy hair-bow. Underneath is a full antique slip and a pair of modern pantaloons, white cotton ribbed stockings, and vintage oilcloth cream colored shoes.

MARKS: 275 Dep [back of head, incised]

CONDITION: Excellent. The bisque head is free of any hairlines, cracks, chips, or restoration, with top quality modeling and painting of features. Her original sleep eyes are missing the upper painted lids when they sleep (see photos). The body is tightly strung and has only some minor and expected age wear and paint retouch. Three fingers are well repaired and well repainted. The costume is in great condition, with hardly any wear. Overall, this is a beautiful and rare antique doll circa 1895, bound to to impress your friends and creep out your teenagers! (We think she's beautiful, but many young people these days have been corrupted by scary doll movies--but we know better! Haha!)
