Representing one of the best, most notable of the earliest character dolls, the Kammer & Reinhardt 100, or "Kaiser" baby, is a real gem to have in the collection. It is said that this baby was modeled after the likeness of Wilhelm II, Kaiser (or emperor) of Germany, who lived from 1859-1941. This K&R model 100 is one of the earliest -- purportedly the second -- character doll put out on the market, and is the first character baby made by K&R/Simon & Halbig! It is an exquisite example of the realism and uniqueness that these lifelike dolls sought to replicate. The deep wrinkles and uncommon expressions both lend themselves to making a face that portrays real personality and lifelike features, resembling a real child as opposed to an idealized version of a child as was commonly represented in doll's faces. additionally, this particular Kaiser baby is in a very rare larger size, standing at 19” tall! He’s got a nice bisque face with light blue painted eyes, and a cute antique costume. This is one baby you can't turn down--with a face only a mother can love, will you considered being his next mom or dad? !

He has a lovely bisque dome head, with a 14” circumference, and a wonderfully modeled expression, depicting a lifelike character face, unique to the Kaiser baby, with realistic wrinkles. The head features light brown brush-stroked hair, molded and painted blue eyes, tapered brown brows, and his open-closed mouth features a delicately modeled tongue with blushed lips. He is on his original five-piece composition baby body, standing at the rare large 19" tall.
He is adorned in a white cotton antique baby gown with delicate whitework embroidery and stripes of inset lace on the top of the bodice and along the hem, with lace trim at the collar, hem, and sleeves, and a pastel yellow crocheted sweater, with three white buttons and a yellow silk ribbon tie at the collar. Underneath, he wears an antique white baby slip, sparsely decorated with delicate whitework embroidery and a scalloped hem, and an off-white wool diaper and matching wool wrap on his torso. On his head is a sweet antique lacy white bonnet decorated all over with inset lace and whitework embroidery, with lace trim at the front at back, a twisted white silk ribbon across the front, and a white silk ribbon under the chin, with a bow on one side.
Marks: K & R [with six-pointed star] / 100 / 50
Condition: Generally Excellent. The bisque head is free of hairlines, cracks, chips, or restoration, with only a few inherent marks and pepper spots. The modeling is sweet and crisp and the painting is smooth and excellent, with a great expression that can only be found among the Kaiser babies. The body is original. His hands have been scrubbed, and there are some craze lines on the painted surface. Overall, a sweet Kaiser baby!
