Does she not tempt the senses? Charles Dana Gibson's unique personification of the "feminine ideal" in his charming "Gibson Girl" illustrations spanned the late 19th and 20th centuries, offering a fresh take on feminine appeal and beauty. Gibson's illustrations of these lovely ladies incorporated long, slender waist, necks, and limbs, coupled with a healthily-voluptuous bosom and hips; these combined to make a truly-stunning figure. The Gibson girl was stylish and respectable, beautiful yet reserved, and a perfect example of the emerging lady of the dawn of the 20th century.
It is no surprise, then, when Kestner, the King of Dollmakers, chose to immortalize even further this iconic character into their very own bisque-headed doll. Originally manufactured with design input from Charles Dana Gibson himself, these dolls have been treasured by collectors for years. Their smooth bisque heads are expertly-modeled with long, slender necks, with pointed and angular features, and set atop top-quality kidskin or cloth bodies with bisque lower arms. But the most distinguishing factor is always the very fashion forward pompadour-styled wigs that these dolls always sport. Considered by their creator to be the "standard" for feminine beauty, the Gibson girl could now be found in dolls shops, adorned in beautiful, stylish costumes and dresses, soon to be found within the collection cabinets and within the arms of eager young girls.
This particular Gibson Girl, by Kestner, is a truly stunning, and quintessential example. A slender bisque shoulder head is tilted up slightly, with crisp facial features, and brown glass sleep eyes. Her cloth body was refashioned from antique muslin fabric as the original was torn and leaking beyond repair. Our expert doll doctress, Iliandra, dis an expert job of matching the pattern and fitting our petite Gibson darling with a wonderful new cloth body so much better than the torn one. Of course we kept the original limbs which she came with. This Gibson Girl is a museum-quality example in a fitting antique ensemble completely appropriate for her age and period.
