An extremely rare doll for a connoisseur of fine French bebes, this beautiful large scale example of the seldom seen Series C Steiner is just enchanting. With some of the largest, most kissable lips I have ever seen on a Steiner, I would simply not want to wander too far from this doll if she were mine all mine- she's just too delightful to neglect! Have a close look at that face... My goodness! The camera could not capture the brilliance of her deep blue eyes in most of the photographs- but in the first photo, you can see how this angel truly glows in person! With singular, memorable features likea her bebe pin, a wonderful antique human hair wig, and this couturier made pink silk and lace court costume, she is ready for her royal presentation. But of course, to fully understand this lovely lady, we must discuss her historical import as a rare Series C doll with the hard to come by Steiner 'Lever Eyes.' A trademark of the Steiner firm was the careful innovation of technical and mechanical advances like the controlled sleeping mechanism of these eyes; paperweight set into enamel enclosed in a brass apparatus that is controlled by a wire on the side of her head. Jules Nicolas Steiner was extremely proud of this early version of sleeping eyes as they did not require a counterweight which might break the bisque as many of the German prototypes did, and he liked that the eyes could be halted in any position, should the doll be 'sleepy', 'just waking', or 'completely asleep', allowing for many different scenarios for children's play. His critics, particularly at L'Exposition Universelle of 1867 were quick to commend his inventions as extraordinary but rather too expensive to succeed in the market (which they ultimately did because of their outstanding quality.) The patent for the mechanical lever eyes was introduced in 1880 in France and Germany, just before Steiner sold manufacturing rights to Bourgoin, a jeweler turned doll maker, who used Steiner's molds and mechanisms to continue building dolls. Bourgoin was overseen by Steiner, and dolls from this period are considered by collectors to be some of the finest and most beautiful bebes ever made. For more information or scans of the original patents, consult the Encyclopedia of French Dolls, or contact us for scans of pages 588-589.
