Rare to find Papier Mache dolls of the mid 1800s are becoming more and more desirable in today's antique doll market due to an increasing demand and a dwindling supply. As time marches on so many of these fragile beauties have aged to the point of no return or been lost to the dustbin of history. To find one and even fair condition with her all original costume still intact and quite presentable is quite rare indeed. Their refined, lady-like expressions, with those reserved hairstyles, and tall construction make the Papier Mache dolls markers of quality collections across the world. This particular lady doll, which stands at an impressive just short of 15" tall, with her painted dark blue, alluring eyes is one such doll.
We know how papier mache doll lovers feel about clean faces- and while she does have some wear, yellowing and typical craze lines, no more so than a fine oil painting of the period which only attests to her age and provenance, she is yet quite a prize for many antique doll lovers to acquire. She is dressed in her original costume consisting of a gauzy olive and mauve cotton print with lace trim and silk ribbons in ecru. Underneath are a polished cotton cream slip and a pair of matching pantaloons. The clothes were sewn on so we decided not to remove them so as to preserve the costume in its original state.

She has a beautiful papier mache shoulder-head on her original antique kidskin body with hand carved wooden limbs with painted on rose slippers. She has molded and painted features and hair including blue painted eyes with dark irises, line upper lids, single stroke arching brows, closed moth, rosy cheeks. Dark hair is done in the middle-part style typical of these early dolls, with sausage c
curls that reveal the ears. She stands at 14.5" tall.
Condition: Generally Good. The papier mache is in good and sturdy condition, but the nose tip is chipped off and slightly touched with paint. There is crazing to the face and plate and fading to the skin tone. Her eyes and lips appear to retain the original paint and the cheeks still show some blush. The original body appears to be in sturdy shape and the wooden limbs are also in good shape as far as can be inspected. The costume is in very good condition but there have been some patches under the skirt where tearing and wear has occurred. This little lady would be at home in any room in need of a fine 1850's child to spruce up the ambiance and recall the past. She would also do well in a museum display.
