In 1899, the Jumeau firm absorbed many of the French doll manufacturers of the day and formed the SFBJ company. The SFBJ sought to compete with the German manufacturers. By 1910, the Germans cornered the market by producing varied character dolls that became very popular with the American market. This wonderful smiling doll was the SFBJ answer to the German character movement of the 1910s that was sweeping the doll world. SFBJ designed their own characters in the 200 series dolls. Thus the SFBJ 250 is one of these character dolls. This girl is a lovely example of the SFBJ 250 character, with her full cheeks and and bright smile; she is sure to capture your heart.
She has beautiful, warm and rosy bisque and very attractive blue paperweight sleep eyes with a deep watery presence that the Jumeau eyes are famous for. She has painted lower lashes and molded and multi stroke brows, an open smiling mouth with four inset upper teeth, a deeply dimpled chin and pierced ears. Her lovely blond mohair wig with short curls and bangs frames her face perfectly! The brows are multi-stroked and feathered and her open smiling mouth seems to be about to speak.
Additionally she is well costumed in a wonderful antique white cotton dress with lace trim and insertion lace and fine tucks, very fine featherstitching, Underneath is a full antique cotton slip and an antique onesie with lace trim, antique white and pink rayon socks, beige leather shoes. on her head is a wonderful antique white cotton bonnet with Battenburg lace trim with pink bows. She is simply the quintessential smiling French character.

MARKS: SFBJ 250 PARIS 8
CONDITION: 2 faint hairline on the crown on each side of the head extending downward. Some specks to the face (see photos), and a straw line at the bridge of the nose. Otherwise, she has excellent bisque with pleasant color, expert painting of features, wonderful deep modeling of expressive character face with a sweet expression. The original child body with original finish in very good condition but there used to be a crier in the body which is no longer functioning (the strings are gone). A rare find in a wonderful medium size. This doll books for over $3500 in perfect condition—but due to her hidden hairlines and other minor issues, I am pricing her at a mere fraction of that cost.
*Please note that the price shown for this doll was calculated by factoring in the doll’s condition carefully. The doll’s condition is described fully in the "Condition" paragraph above. Any damage or flaws are carefully evaluated as to the manner in which they may reduce the retail value of this item. Unless there is some major issue we overlooked in the condition report, we decline to entertain any proposals for price reductions due to a less than perfect condition report. Most dolls that are over 100 years old will have encountered issues over the years and perfection is rare when it comes to antiques.
