Tonight we present The Ballerina by Roulet & Descamps, French maker of automatons and clockwork toys circa 1860 to 1900. What a darling delight this young lady is with her fluffy original tutu bedecked with pale blue silk banners trimmed with metallic trim and pearls. She is “en pointe” and her as she gracefully dances, twirling, moving her leg back and forth, turning and tilting her head, bending at the waist while holding a flower garland. Accompanying her dance moves is a sweet a melodic air which plays in the background. What a complete delight this toy still is after so many years of flawless operation. Our little champion never tires of her ballet recital! If you are a collector of musical automata, this is simply a “must have marvel!”

Posed en pointe upon a red velvet-covered large wooden platform is a ballerina with bisque head, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, closed mouth, original blond mohair wig in up-do and having a shapely lady torso with bisque shoulder plate, long slender shapely legs with special attention to bony ankles, and bisque forearms and hands.
She is wearing her original pale blue silk and cream net ballerina costume with gold braid edging trimmed with tiny pearl beads, ruffled lace collar, silk ballet slippers, and holds a garland of silk flowers. When wound, music plays and she pirouettes en pointe, moves her left leg forward and backward in an elegant sweep, while inclining her upper torso side to side and moving her arms up and down and tilting her head side to side.
Marks: 3 (in reverse on the back of head). F G in scroll on the shoulderplate.
Comments: Roullet et Decamps, circa 1890, with bisque head from Emile Jumeau or Emile Douillet and plate from Francois Gaultier. The popular ballet theme was developed into automaton themes by several makers during this time. Value Points: rare automaton gracefully and realistically captures classic ballet movements with grace and elegance, and is preserved with beautiful original costume, wig, and accessories in her original wooden box.
CONDITION: Generally excellent. The head with good quality bisque, crisp modeling and expert painting of features and gentle blushing. The bisque hands affixed to sturdy wire armatures connected to internal clockwork movements are in excellent shape but the left hand has had some restoration to the fingers (see photo). Also, there is an inherent cooking line to the left upper crown rim (see photo) and a couple of inherent specks to the face. The movements consist of the head turning from side to side and tilting. The torso tilting from side to side causing the arms to move up and down, the left leg points forward and then points back. All this while pirouetting to the sound of a pretty melody. The automaton is in overall excellent condition. There is wear to the velvet covering of the box. A truly wonderful French automaton with charming presence! LBK- 6/30/18
