In 1899, the Jumeau firm absorbed many of the French doll manufacturers of the day and formed the SFBJ company. The SFBJ sought to compete with the German manufacturers. By 1910, the Germans cornered the market by producing varied character dolls that became very popular with the American market. This wonderful pouty doll was the SFBJ answer to the German character movement of the 1910s that was sweeping the doll world. SFBJ designed their own characters in the 200 series dolls and also modified their doll bodies to represent babies and toddlers. Thus the SFBJ 252 became the most desirable of all the “pouty” dolls. This girl is a lovely example of the SFBJ 252 Pouty, with her full cheeks and extreme pouting expression; she captured the hearts of so many doll lovers. Today, she is the prize of any doll collection that specializes in character dolls. Dressed in a cute French school girl dress with beret and cute bow, she is bound to touch your heart as well!
She has beautiful, warm and rosy bisque and very attractive blue paperweight eyes with a deep watery presence that the Jumeau eyes are famous for. (However, these antique French eyes are replaced). Her lovely French auburn human hair wig with short curls and bangs frames her face perfectly! The brows are multi-stroked and feathered and her closed pouting mouth seems to be about to cry.
Additionally she is well costumed in a wonderful antique blue gingham cotton toddler dress with white artist’s collar and white cotton cuffs and white casement buttons is so adorable. Underneath is a full antique cotton slip and another full slip, plus a pair of antiqe pantaloons, whit cotton antique socks and black leather shoes. Atop her head is an obligatory blue velvet bonnet, so indicative of French schoolchildren of the era. She is simply the quintessential pouty character.
