If early French Jumeau dolls make your heart go pitter-patter and if you just can’t resist antique dolls dressed in superb period appropriate frothy dresses, you have landed on the right planet. This super fabulous early Jumeau bebe doll boasts all of the sought-after characteristics of the early Jumeau bebes and comes to us in superior condition for all of the years she has existed. With a face that foreshadows the EJA and has remarkable similarities to the Schmitt bebe (which, incidentally, was produced by Jumeau), she possesses that certain French “je ne sais quoi” that all collectors of fine antique dolls desire most.
She represents the earliest transition from the famous Jumeau Fashion Poupees into the realm of Bebe dolls that Emile Jumeau (son of Pierre Francois Jumeau) was trying to redirect in his father's company. In the period around 1876 to 1877, the first adverts for the Jumeau bebes are mentioned to be introduced at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. This doll would usher in the Bebe period for Jumeau which would become more popular than the fashion poupees of the Pierre Francois Jumeau era. (See page 284 of The Jumeau Book by Francois Theimer and Florence Theriault).
Her huge, light blue spiral eyes immediately draw you in with their dramatic hypnotic gaze. Her delicately pale and smooth bisque denotes the highest quality that Jumeau had to offer. Her serene and gently confident expression, truly a tribute to the talent of the artist who designed her mold, perhaps after a special child known to the producers, is so lifelike and compelling that I am sure you will be instantly captivated by this wonderful work of art. So if you want to bring your collection up to “world class status” this is your best opportunity to add one of these super rare and super sought-after JUMEAU French dolls to your collection. How often do you come across such delectable girls with so much charm, culture and history behind them? I’ll wager, not too often. Additionally, most of the earlier Portrait Jumeaux were produced in the 14" to 17" sizes, but finding one in this larger size is very rare indeed!

Hypnotic ice-blue spiral paperweight eyes with painted upper and lower lashes, multi stroke arching soft brows, mauve eye shadow, closed mouth with shading and accents, well modeled applied pierced ears with antique glass bead earrings, lovely angelic blond mohair wig with wispy, delicate curls and bangs.
Wearing her wonderful polished cotton and silk dress with lace trim was masterfully recreated from antique fabrics appropriate to the period of manufacture of this bebe, circa 1887. She also wears antique cotton pantaloons, an antique cotton and lace half slip and a short lace edged chemise. Best of all, she wears antique French Jumeau signed shoes in pale blue cloth to match her dress and antique cream net socks.
