When two great minds come together, the result is nothing short of a masterpiece. A pair of the most famous French doll artisans created this astonishing girl with a special secret- she talks! Beneath her original cream dress with its frothy lace, blue ribbons, and decorative pleats, her torso opens to reveal an ingenious phonograph mechanism. She's a beauty as well as a piece of mechanical history- the sweetest blue eyes and rosebud smile framed by original golden curls. Something about her is so beatific, like a Renaissance painting...fitting for a true work of art!
What a delightful expression this precious all original Bebe Phonographe has! She seems so excited to sing a song she learned in school to her Mama and Papa. Dressed in her sweet factory original chemise, with the secret flap front panel which allows easy access to her interior works, permiting the child to switch out the cylindrical records conveniently. In her original dusty blond human hair wig and her "Bee" stamp size 11 Jumeau shoes and socks, this bebe is appointed with all of her factory assets from the day she was born at the Jumeau factory in Paris, France! Oh my, and I forgot to mention her aqua beaded necklace and her coral and aqua glass beaded earrings. What a real treasure she is.
As far as the talking working mechanism goes, the key turns well and so does the cylinder shaft all the parts are present but the record does not rotate. What a darling little chanson this Bebe Phonographe would sing to her dear daddy when a child delighted in turning the key at the back of her torso and activating the “on” switch. This charming doll must have brought hours of amusement to her Victorian family! And how lucky are we to have the pleasure of re-imagining and reliving that moment here in the 21st century?—More than 100 years after she was produced by Jumeau in 1893 in collaboration with Lioret. She must have been a truly special treasure to the families that subsequently owned her because she still has her original Factory chemise and is entirely all original!
This doll has a cylinder, hand marked Marche Reale with its original circular box.
She is also available for Layaway. Take up to 8 months to pay!
She has a bisque socket head on a fully jointed Jumeau body with a metal plate with sound holes on the torso covering a Jumeau/Lioret patented Talking Key-wind mechanism complete with a Jumeau labeled cylinder record. Beautiful BIG blue paperweight eyes with painted upper and lower lashes, multi stroke feathered, thick brows, open mouth with shading and accents and six upper teeth, pierced ears, original dusty blond human hair wig over her original cork pate.
Wearing her extraordinary original Jumeau Bebe dress with flap-down front panel to reveal the operating works in her torso and to facilitate the changing of the player cylinders. The dress is made of light cream organdy cotton with slightly dropped waist, box pleat down the front and symmetrical knife pleats on either side, a lace band with insertion blue ribbon at the waist, lace square "Bertha" collar hides the flap. There is lace trim to the big, collar, cuffs and hem and blue ribbon accents throughout the dress. She also comes with her original draw string cotton half slip with ruffled ham and lace edged. Underneath is a fine pair of original cotton drawstring pantaloons with lace edge, original antique cream net socks with original incised with Bee Jumeau black leather shoes in great condition. The frilly antique white cotton bonnet is an antique addition to her costume.
Marks: TETE JUMEAU (faint red stamp) 11 On body: BEBE JUMEAU Bte S.G.D.G. DEPOSE
On the Cylinder:
PHONOGRAPHE HJL Bte S.D.G.D Patent / SYSTEM LIORET
on the rear torso:
JUMEAU / MEDAILLE D'OR / PARIS
CONDITION: Generally excellent. The beautiful head with pale and fine quality bisque, pleasant color, expert painting of delicate features, crisp modeling of gorgeous Jumeau classic face with a slightly smiling expression. Her Original Jumeau body in excellent, original finish condition but the hands with repaint over flaked surface and some areas beginning to flake in typical Jumeau fashion. The Key wind mechanism still can be wound and it activates motion in the works. The stylus scrapes against the tracks on the cylinder record and a voice is heard chanting a song but it is hard to determine what she is singing and the speed slows down as the spring unwinds. Also, a holding nut is missing which holds the cylinder steady. This can be easily replaced. The original signed Jumeau Body with Key at the back and start and stop button at the rear torso. There is some typical wear and flaking to the joints and the hands have been touched-up and some paint missing at the left upper arm. It is so rare to find a phonograph Jumeau in such working order and all original.
A wonderful and rare Phonograph Jumeau that will be a magnificent addition to any collection, large or small. Please take the time to view all of the photos and you can also view the action of the voice-box on YouTube. The link will be provided shortly. LBK 6-1-17
