What a rare early find! One of the most fabulous motschmann children we've ever had, this outstanding little one with her wax over papier mache head, big dark eyes and period appropriate gown will steal the shine in any collection of early, extraordinary dolls. I absolutely ADORE this cute, huggable example with very fine detail of painting and a very sweet antique dress. She is just an A+ doll in every way! One of the more important pieces in the puzzle of the history of rare and early articulated dolls, Motschmanns were made in Germany based on the idea of the Japanese gofun dolls of the previous century which had recently been brought to the Europe. The German craftsmen were very excited about the foreign dolls' anatomy with elements like floating hips and movable wrists and ankles allowing for greater articulation. Other doll makers like Steiner and Conta & Boehme were also influenced by this body shape and utilized it in their productions. Yet, the unknown German workshops that made the papier mache dolls like the one here were still seeking something more than simply the articulated bodies to set their product apart. To give the faces that extra special lifelike glow, a thin wax layer was added over the composition in the more delux models like this one. I am so excited to offer this beautiful doll for sale because it is one of only three examples I have handled with the wax over and such lovely features. This baby is 10" with hat and dress she is 12"

Paper mache wax over socket head on swivel, on paper mache plate. Dark irises on glass eyes, set inside. Painted and molded features. Paper mache arms, pelvis, and lower legs, with connecting antique cloth portions. She is sporting a lovely period appropriate antique striped open collar gown with lovely layers of patterned fabric added for color variation and decoration (good condition with some agewear visible in photos, structurally sound.) Plus a lovely pale pink silk antique sash. Underneath she has a cream cotton underdress with lace edging along with a pair of ribbed cotton stocking socks. Woohoo! This is one display ready darling.
CONDITION: Very Good! Paper mache tends to have minor signs of aging, such as peppering; otherwise, excellent. The painting of the face is entirely original except for the lips which appear to have had a small bit of touch up. Otherwise excellent! Brows and eye cuts and cheeks are all original! The body is in fabulous, untouched condition. Wonderful condition of the body, just a great doll in every way. This is a remarkably good bill of health for a 170+ year old papier mache doll, which are among the more delicate types of antique dolls, especially considering that these wonderful works of art were created as toys! Glass eyes are very good. Cloth has age wear and discoloration, which is typical, but doesn’t have any patchwork or damage. This is a fabulous little angel to have in your collection that will not disappoint for years to come!
NOTE: The wooden crib shown in some of these photos is NOT included in this listing! Only the doll is being sold in this listing.
