One of the rarest baby dolls we have ever handled, this extremely special Kley & Hahn infant produced for the Hertel & Schwabb firm is sure to be a singular treasure in any collection! I have never had another like him, in my 35 years of handling antique dolls, just to give you an idea of how seldom seen this example is. Made during the Art Character Movement in the 1910's, this rare little cherub was created to capture the mercurial quality of a real infant- at one moment delighted, the next, melancholic. But what really sets this example apart from the crowd is the extremely animated and lifelike rendering of the facial features; the smile that dimples the cheeks, mouth open with two baby teeth showing- and the sad cry as the dimples now appear at the furrowed brow and the eyes seem as though they have welled up with tears. The sculptural quality of the extremely fine bisque is exquisite. I have, in the past, seen an example of this baby sell over $4000 to a character doll collector at auction, and I have seen smaller examples (in the 12-14" range) sell for less, but because of his very well repaired boo-boo, we are offering him at a very fair price for his rarity and quality. And that's not even to mention the wonderful presentation he comes in! All antique down to the bonnet and booties... You will not find another art character baby of this quality anywhere, anytime soon!

Solid domed bisque socket head with outstanding modeling and painting of features on both faces. Happy face features beep blue glass sleep eyes with painted lashes, feathered flyaway brows, and an open mouth with two upper molded teeth. Slight rosiness to cheeks on both faces. Deep cheek dimples, with dimpled chin. The sad face features a wonderful 'character modeling' with ice blue painted eyes, deep, expressive facial lines, and pouting open-closed mouth with tongue. Original composition baby body in excellent condition standing at 20" tall with a 13.5" head circumference. What a beauty!
He is wearing a fabulous antique baby-gown made of a patterned and textured cotton with wonderful crocheted inserts down the front which alternate with ruched panels of the cotton base fabric. Crochet trimmed sleeves, mother of pearl buttons down the back. Measuring 44" long! Please note that there are a few buttons missing in the back. Truly a spectacular gown that must have taken days to make! Underneath he has a lovely homespun half slip that fills out almost to the bottom of the dress. Blue crochet booties, and an undershirt that can be sewn back on as it is in the photos at the request of his new mommy or daddy! And then there's my favorite part.. The fabulous silk hat with marabou trim! I certainly have never seen another like it- I think it completes this doll perfectly. What an amazing beauty!!!
Marks: 12 (happy face neck)
CONDITION: There is some restoration to the head; hairlines have been carefully repaired that branch from an impact to the right temple of the sad face. Please see the photos, we've done our best to doccument it; the restoration is FABULOUS and you cannot see it from more than 18" away from the head, so for what he is, he is certainly worth adding to the collection, despite his flaw. Other than that, the bisque is gorgeous. Great modeling and painting of facial features, with fine color and nice complexion. Body is original, with fabulous original finish, only minor agewear. What a true treasure! I've never handled a baby like this, and I highly doubt that I will ever have the privilege of another one so cute as this.
