18" Smiling Poupee By Louis Doleac C. 1882 With Bisque Arms, Shop Label, Trunk & Original Silk Couture Costume
Meet Mademoiselle Elizabeth Richardson and have a moment to gaze upon the unparalleled beauty of one of the rarest and most radiant fashion dolls you will ever find. One the most outstanding poupees we have ever had the pleasure of offering for sale, this rare Parisienne of the golden age will capture your heart with her stunning features and angelic smile. I have never seen a more beautiful poupee by Louis Doleac- and I have looked far and wide, researching this outstanding mademoiselle. A very elusive manufacturer, there are only a handful of dolls that remain passed down to our generation from the Louis Doleac firm, which was founded in 1881 at 16 Rue Des Archives in Paris. There was only one doll shop in Paris which sold the outstanding treasures created by the Doleac firm in the 1880's and 90's; Au Paradis Des Enfants, at 156 Rue De Rivoli, where we can be sure that a loving first mother discovered and adopted this startling beauty in the early 1880's, keeping her loved and near mint for years to come. We imagine that the name written on her fabulous original socks, "Elizabeth Richardson" was given to her when she was acquired by a wealthy English child on holiday from London in France, and taken back to the United Kingdom as a treasure of travel. Over a century has passed now, since Elizabeth's creation, but time has been good to this most beautiful face of times gone by. With a quality of painting that is on par with the dolls of the most desirable poupee designers such as Auguste Dehors, George Herman Most, Adelaide Huret, and Leotine Rohmer, this exquisite Doleac is nothing short of perfection. With her incredibly delicate painting of features, and that budding smile, what I love so much about this model is how lifelike she appears- that her cheeks seem to be rising, her eyes glowing, those lips about to part and bid us a good day. And her costumes! She sports her original silk couture day dress PLUS an outstanding 1880's silk ball gown with brocade silk flowers, as well as a plush velvet opera cape- she's ready for a lady's full day of activities in her posh London flat. Not to mention her shoes... ten grommet leather lace up poupee boots with silk edging and silver buckles shoes are worth dreaming about. Truly a one of a kind investment and treasured crowning jewel for the collector of these astounding Golden Age poupees.

And because we know how important it is, these days for collectors who are interested in the historical importance of their best dolls, Mademoiselle will come to you not only with the top tier gifts and guarantees that we offer with these beauties, but also with a press kit of important documents on the firm that made her. This includes the entry on the Louis Doleac firm in the Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Francois Themeire and Florence Theriault, as well as the entry with many examples in the Panorama of Parisienne Fashion Dolls, also by Francois Theimer. We will also be including a scan from the Hanne Buktas collection catalogue, of a doll that was attributed to Doleac by Theimer which realized over $60,000, having the same body and painted eyes, in a smaller size than the doll offered here.~
Superb creamy bisque swivel head on original shoulder-plate attached to original body with superb long line bisque arms that go far above the elbow with delicate details of fingernails, knuckle dimples, shading, blush and accenting to hands and elbow. She has a most beautiful face with delicious painting of lashes, lips, brows that perfectly match her mohair wig styled in a braided updo. She has accent painting of the lips, lining of the inner eyecuts, cobalt colored paperweight eyes, original blue earrings, and dimpled chin. Wonderful wasp waisted lady body with gussets at the hips and knees. Individually hand stitched toes that are wired and molded. Heart shaped stitching at ankles. She is just a vision!
Mademoiselle has a very full collection of garments for her daily activities out and about in London Town! Her day starts by slipping on her all original set of undergarments including a broderie anglaise trimmed pair of pantaloons, then her embroidered chemise top, over which goes her lovely matched broderie anglaise half slip. For a turn about the Victoria Gate in Hyde Park, our beautiful French Ex-Patriot might choose to wear a very lovely taupe silk dress with a ruffled hem, with seven pleats down the front center panel and a delicate beige and olive braid down the edges accented with metallic threads. This, her original dress, has a lined bodice top with a fine ruffle of lace around the collar and cuffs, as well as a perfect accent of olive silk bustle and panel bows. But when it is time to change for dinner with the Queen's cousin, Mademoiselle must not be put out in her day dress! Instead she sports an outstanding gold silk dress with black lace, embroidered silk flowers with very delicate ebony accents in the fabric. Lace around the collar, and cuffs. The black lace ruffle with black salt and pepper silk trim. She sports her original socks inscribed 'Elizabeth Richardson' and her fabulous original ten grommet lace up shoes! WOAH, this costume. She is completed with an olive velvet opera cape with cream silk ruffle and lace trim. But my favorite accessory? Her original black lace snood with silk trimming. I've never seen one in such mint shape before! She also comes with her original skin wig.

Condition: Excellent condition of head and plate, with the most professional and exquisite painting of features; have you seen another poupee with such wonderful mauve eyeshadow, blond brows and pert features? We certainly haven't! The tiniest rub to her right cheek that is hardly noticeable. There is some professional repair to interior of left middle finger, and right thumb as well as interiors of right fingers. This is an extremely well done restoration- I don't think there was any rebuild, just a break that was repainted. Without this minor flaw, we would be asking in the $20,000 range for her. Otherwise she is in MINT condition, with that original shop stamp on the torso. When have you ever seen one like this before??? We certainly have not! I will be sad to see her go. I know she is an outstanding example of one of the rarest fashion poupees ever made. TBS 8/30/16. RLI-2121
