Look at these little cuties! These four little cherubs (two in a "hugger" pair) are beautiful bisque babes, capturing the pinnacle of Rose O'Neil's artistry in her four year-long production of these bisque dolls by J.D. Kestner. We've dated these as some of the earliest models, circa 1913, with gorgeous modeling and molding, all in a petite size.
First, we have two of the standard standing Kewpies, both 4.5" tall. They have smooth bisque, with intricate detailing to the faces, and blonde painted stroke hair, with their trademark peak tops. They both look off to the side with a curious and shy expression, their mouths tucked into sweet smiles. They both bear their original "Kewpie Germany" shield chest labels, their trademark blue cherub wings in the back, and both have copyright round labels on their backs -- one is in German, with "Gesetzlich Geschutzt", and the other in English, with "COPYRIGHT ROSE O NEILL". One of them has the original engraved O'Neil signature on the bottom of the feet! See photos for more detailing!
The last two are actually a pair of "Huggers", two molded-together Kewpie standing at around 3.5" tall. They both have intricate painting of those coy Kewpie features, with those cute smiles and raised brows, with their painted and slightly molded blond hair, with standard peaks, and blue angel wings. One of them has the (C) copyright mark on the bottom of the foot.
Condition: Fantastic! The detailing in the bisque is fabulous, showing the intricate and expert craftsmanship that went into the earliest models of Kewpies. The labels are intact as well, which is a hard find. One of the standing Kewpies has a minor inherent mold flaw to the peak of his hair -- being pulled from the mold, the peak must have come out slightly unfinished, and was then painted over. It has been blacklighted, and there is no restoration -- this is a purely factory-original piece. The other standing Kewpie has no excuses! The hugger pair is in fabulous shape, except for a tiny flake off the tip of the peak of one of their heads... Still, overall, this is a fantastic lot of Kewpies, a great opportunity for the lover of the Rose O'Neil signature cherubs!
