These extraordinary cast-iron and brass book rack or bookends from the 1920’s are an excellent example of the Judd Company of New Britain, Connecticut’s beautiful craftsmanship and style. Founded in 1833 as a harness manufacturer, it would not be until the early 1900’s the Judd Co. would begin to produce fine quality castings in brass, bronze and iron. The expanding book rack measures 21 inches long open and 12 inches long closed. The dog ornaments are cast iron with handsome art nouveau decoration and measure 7 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches high. The book rack rods are made of brass. Everything is in good working order with nice patina and there is just a bit of paint loss to the bulldogs commensurate with use. The piece is unmarked but is attributed to the Judd Co.
