A nice antique pug dog head pendant that measures 1 1/2" high by 7/8" wide by 1 1/4" deep and has a loop for hanging on a chain. In the late 1800s, when it became difficult to obtain ivory, several synthetic substances, including celluloid, were developed to substitute for this popular material. One of the most curious was a composition of milk solids preserved with alkalis and formaldehyde, an early casein plastic. It was used for such widely differing purposes as making buttons and billiard balls. This figure was made of that milk composition, and affectionately called a "cheesehead." It was supposed that it was intended to be used as a doll head, but in the years since these figures were made at the turn of the 19th century, the original purpose has been forgotten and they were made into pendants to be worn around the neck. It is in very nice condition and also has a drilled hole on one ear and I'm unsure of reason for this but each one I've owned has it.
