Presenting a vintage round wire gathering basket that is not only utilitarian but very decorative. The craftsman making it took extra effort to make the wires form an interesting swag like design, circa 1910-20. The French call it "fil de fer". The wire handle swings freely and can lock upright. There is a brace on the bottom that could be used for hanging it and/or perhaps attaching it to someone/something. The wires are delicate but the basket is sturdy, clean, free of breaks and solidly bound.
The basket measures 8" dia x 5" h x 9" overall when handle is up. Designed for collecting various foods; shellfish, large berries, greens and they could also rinse them while in the basket. They could have collected eggs but those baskets would have mostly horizontal wires and the opening would be smaller.
