Antique English case covered in sisal and lined in a patterned paper ca.1890. In remarkable condition, the sisal is all intact, it shuts tight(no key) and is sturdy enough to act as a table. The interior is clean and tidy. Size -20" wide x 15 1/2" deep x 14" high. The paper label inside reads: "H. Boswell, Manufacturers (on the premises) of all kinds of Portmanteaus Trunks, bags, dressing cases, hat boxes, etc. 49 & 50 Cornmarket St. Oxford"
This is from Wikipedia: The store has been trading since 1738, and is probably the oldest family owned department store in the world. Initially founded by Francis Boswell and located at 50 Cornmarket Street. Boswells started up in business manufacturing and selling luggage and trunks, and it is widely believed their wares were taken on Captain Cook's trip to explore the Southern Hemisphere. Wow that's a lot of history, to imagine this store was operating30 years before Captain Cook sailed on his 1st voyage! That's 275 years ago. The store moved around the corner in 1928 and is called Boswells now ,there is a Clarks shoe store at 50 Cornmarket street now, with a Gap next door and a KFC across the street. Progress...
