An antique very early Victorian(possibly late Georgian) hand carved lava brooch depicting a baby Bacchante with vine leaves and grapes on his shoulder and a thyrsus behind him. This subject is very rare and highly sought after.
Condition is generally Ok, the cherub's nose appears to be slightly rubbed and the frame has been repaired or converted, I suspect, from antiquity from what was originally a clasp into a brooch, the opening of the clasp to hold the incoming tongue was not completely closed but the current frame is quite secure and the pin back is in perfect working order.
Measures approx 1-1/4 inches by 1 inch.
