A very fine and quite rare piece, hand carved shell cameo depicting a Goddess with a star decorating her forehead. Probably one of the Pleiades, daughters of Pleione the "sailing queen", who is believed to guide the sailors with the night stars.
The carving is beautiful with amazing details on her face and hair, down to her graduated pearl necklace. I just love the way that snow white foreground stands out of the darker background, gives her a sense of hope and purity.
Set in a marked 9ct gold frame with clover leaves like decorations over the four corners.
The piece is a brooch or pin as well as a pendant. It has a top fold down bail that's quite large and fancy. The pin back bent a bit but is functioning well. It still retains the original T hinge and a quite rare pin catch that features a cap for protection, please check out the photos.
There are a couple of faint lines to the upper left corner of the cameo, only visible in a strong back light. The piece measures approx. 1 3/4" by 1 1/2" by 3/8" deep of high relief. With the bail it hangs 2 1/8" from the chain.
A beautiful piece of a rare subject, originally would be a gift to a Victorian sailor to help him find his way in the night sea, for now I think she is just a perfect way to say to that special someone: "You are the star of my life!"
