This is a gorgeous piece!
Dated to 1900-1910 this is a french piece which still shows the influence of the Victorian era. The brooch is of a lovely spiral snake design, it is crafted out of solid 18K yellow gold (marked with an eagle's head to the tail) with platinum top (tested), which is a very stylish design of the late Victorian early Edwardian time.
The snake has countless rose cut diamond to its body and two red ruby eyes. It also has over the top of its head, a halo design of a red spinel stone surrounded with rose cut diamonds, there is a tiny chip to the spinel over the edge under the loupe, not visible when worn. The diamond are white, clean, and sparkle, set in platinum to bring out the most of it's fiery beauty.
The very unusual part of this brooch is that the snake has a widely open mouth that you can look through! I cannot stop thinking this might be used as a flower holder where you attach it through the pin back to your blouse or jacket, and then insert a flower or a small bouquet through the snake's mouth. Or it may be an old slider with a pin back attached in the antiquity.
In any case it is a very lovely and very rare piece, it measures approx. 1-1/2 inches long by 5/8 inches wide by 1/2 inches deep, weighs 4.8grams, the pin back is in good working order.
