We are glad to offer this Gorgeous HUGE and Heavy 14K solid yellow gold (tested) ring, which features an antique Victorian hand engraved carnelian agate intaglio depicting the portrait of Apollo, God of music, poetry, and the arts, as indicated by the lyre (Kithara) in front of his face and the laurel wreath adorn his hair. (Apollo has many hats on his head and here the focus is obviously on the arts side).
The engraving of this intaglio is masterfully executed and in wonderful condition, you can see the amazing details in the impression of the intaglio in wax.
In the 18th and 19th century the wearing of images of the classical gods, whether in a ring or on a fob, became very popular and was done in imitation of the ancient Greek and Roman peoples who did the same in their time. This intaglio ring would make a great addition to any collection or would be appropriately worn by anyone interested in the arts or music.
And the ring is in EXCELLENT condition all around. I don't see any damage or repair. the solid 14K gold ring mounting is chunky and substantial, free of any damage or repair. The carnelian stone is of the most beautiful and rich honey orange color with a very lovely trace of natural variation, a deeper cherry red, near the 8 o'clock position. Under the loupe there is the slightest smoothing over the right edge near the lyre. This cannot be seen by naked eye and is just mentioned for accuracy.
The intaglio measures approximately 24mm by 19mm. The ring head measures 1 1/16 inches North to South by a tad over 7/8 inches East to West, and raises 1/4 inches above the finger.
The ring is a finger size 11, the 14K gold setting is thick and heavy, very presentable and a well match to the large stone, the piece weight a stunning 18.6g, will suit a gentleman or a lady who would like to make a statement.
