A wonderful early 19th century antique ca. 1840-1850 hand carved natural shell cameo carved in relief to depict a stunning classical portrait of a beautiful Dionysus (sometimes go as Dionysos), or Bacchus, god of the vine, wine and fertility.
This is a classic back view of Dionysus out of the book, the carving is superb with fine details to depict the god wearing grapes in his long hair and holding a bunch of grapes in his right hand with good use of shell surface to give color to his robes - a popular and highly collectible cameo motif.
This handsome cameo is mounted into a very decorative silver frame with serrated edge and engraved twist decoration around the edge. The original long steel pin T hinge and silver "C" clasp are in Excellent working condition.
The cameo itself is also in GREAT condition, only a couple of very short and faint lines visible only under strong back light.
The piece is also quite LARGE, measures 2-1/4" long by 1-3/4" wide, stands 5/8" from base exclude pin back, weight a substantial 18.2g.
