At the turn of the century, elaborate hairstyles necessitated the use of hair combs and other devices to maintain the elaborate hairstyles. Since most women seldom cut their hair, these devices by necessity, had to be able hold the heavy hair in place. Hair combs were employed and fancy hair combs were often worn at night. Many of these combs were made of a new material, celluloid. This new plastic was chosen because combs could be very large and ornate, yet lightweight as well as emulating a more expensive materials.
This pair of combs has a very simple style that is enhanced by the use of blue, glass rhinestones. There are three rows of blue stones which arch around the top of the combs. The plastic itself emulates tortoise shell. Each comb has five prongs, which are 2" in length. The overall length of the combs is just under 3". They are 1-3/4" wide.
Of the two combs, one has all it's original stones intact. The other comb is missing one stone and appears to have had a stone replacement in the past. The replaced stone is a darker blue and has some glue reside around it. It is still very wearable.
