Can't you just see this on the lapel of a jacket on Mad Men? The ever so professional secretary, who always has a pencil at hand?
The upper, brooch portion is engraved on the front with a floral design. The reverse has a geometric machine design. The upper portion is where the pin back is located and contains the spring and wire cord for the pencil. The pencil itself is a four sided rectangle with a conical point. Both the upper and lower portion are a gold tone metal. The delicate chain inside is also gold tone metal.
The condition is good. The spring that retracts the chain is still nice and strong. The chain itself has an age patina. There is scuffing on the pencil overall. There is no lead in the pencil, but it appears the mechanism for the lead works fine
The pencil is signed on the reverse Ketchum and McDougall, E. Orange NJ on the reverse.
The body of the pin is 1" in diameter, the pencil is 2-1/2" long by 1/4" wide, the retractable chain is 15" long. The overall length of both the pencil and brooch is 4".
