Ray Brown was one of the most important US Jazz bassists, most of all bop-oriented Jazz. He was married with Ella Fitzgerald ( only from 1948 – 52 ).
The very day he arrived in New York ( 1945 ) he played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. There is a film from 1947 “ Jiving in Bepop “ where Ray Brown is playing with Dizzy Gillespie.
He later played Jazz at the Philharmonic and with an early formation of the Modern Jazz Quartett and from 1951 – 1966 he became member of the famous Oscar Peterson Trio. After years of jamming here and there – with musicians like Quincy Jones – he formed the legendary The Ray Brown Trio.
His last sessions were with Monty Alexander (piano ) and Russell Malone ( guitar ).
He died in Indianapolis in 2002.
