Kiepura, born in Upper Silesia, now Poland had his debut in 1925 In the same year Kiepura wins a singing competition, receives the title "King of the Polish tenors" as well as a first commitment at the Warsaw opera. Franz Schalk engages him for the Viennese State Opera in 1926, where Kiepura sings at the side of Maria Jeritza in "Tosca".
An expanded European tour leads him to London, Milan and Paris; appearances in South America follow 1930/31. In May 1932 he is appointed as a member of the Viennese state opera the chamber singer.
His breakthrough as artist came in 1934 with "my heart is calling " at the side of the Hungarian actress and singer Martha Eggerth.

In 1936 Kiepura plays in the American film "Give US This Night" at the side of the singer Gladys Swarthout.
He flees from the Nazi at the beginning of WWII along with his wife Martha Eggerth and they soon play successfully at the New Yorker Broadway - with pieces like "the Merry Widow" and "Polonaise".
Apart from its artistic commitment January Kiepura supports humanitarian organizations during the war like the "Relief Fund for Poland" with generous financial means.
