Roy Richard Scheider (1932 –2008) was an American actor. He was best known for his role as police chief Martin Brody in Jaws, his role as Joe Gideon in All That Jazz, and as detective Buddy Russo in The French Connection. Scheider's final role comes as Joseph in the 2010 thriller Iron Cross.
"Klute" and "The French Connection" were his first important movies - the latter earned him an Oscar nomination.
"Jaws" and "Jaws 2" followed. Then he was the secret agent older brother of Dustin Hoffman in "Marathon Man" but one of his best roles was the portrayal of director Bob Fosse in "All That Jazz" earning a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his efforts.
Scheider played a psychiatrist who gets involved with Meryl Streep in "Still of the Night" was a police man in the thriller "Blue Thunder" (1983); and Dr. Floyd Heywood in "2010".
