Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl Ludwig Joseph Johann Maria ( aka Burg, Ferdinand, the name of Archduke Ferdinand Karl since 1911) was born in 1868 at Vienna as the third and youngest son of Arch Duke Karl Ludwig, the younger brother of Kaiser Franz Joseph I. and his second wife Maria Annunziata von Neapel-Sizilien.
After the early death of his mother he was affectionately raised by his stepmother Maria Theresia.
In 1884 he was commissioned as a Leutant in ulan regiment number 4 and then at the Order of the Golden Fleece. Emperor Franz Joseph ordered his expulsion from the military forces and from the House of Habsburg in 1911 following his affair with Berta Czuber.
