Japan 1918: Three prisoner of war postcards from Japanese prisoner of war camp.
All three are from Kurume, 2 sent to Hamburg, one to Seestermuehe (all in Germany). One postcard was to confirm the receipt of cigars and tobacco sent from family.
They all have cancellations from the POW camp, red marks for transfer and additional censor marks.
When Germany and its allies were defeated in Tsingtao, their soldiers were captured and sent to Japan. More than 4,600 prisoners of war were interned in temporary camps in cities throughout Japan (Kumamoto, Kurume, Fukuoka, Oita, Marugame, Matsuyama, Tokushima, Himeji, Osaka, Nagoya, Shizuoka and Tokyo). Ultimately eighty-seven prisoners died in captivity.
