Antique Chinese Zi Tan Sceptre Ruyi
Decorative, antique Chinese scepter 如意 (so-called ruyi) in shape of a mushroom 靈芝 (lingzhi).
Size: 14 ½ x 3 ½ x 2 ¾ inches (36 x 9 x 6,5 cm) 343 gram. Very well carved, good condition, no knocks or cracks.
Ruyi (Chinese: 如意; literally: "as desired; as [you] wish") is a curved decorative object that serves as a ceremonial sceptre in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore. A traditional ruyi has a long S-shaped handle and a head fashioned like a fist, cloud, or lingzhi mushroom.
The lingzhi mushroom or reishi mushroom (traditional Chinese: 靈芝; pinyin: língzhī; Japanese: 霊芝;) enjoys special veneration in East Asia, where it has been used as a medicinal mushroom in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest mushrooms known to have been used medicinally.
