Old scroll with a painting by Ren Bonian. Birds and Tong-tree blossoms. (桐花山禽).
The original painting has been portrayed as woodblock watercolour print on silk. The technique is so refined that it almost looks like the original painting. The work it has been made in the Shanghai Duo yun xian studio (上海朶云軒) which is, along with the Rongbao-zhai studio in Beijing) the best if it comes to perfection.
Scroll size: 37 cm broad (14 ½ inches) and 120 cm long (47 inches), diameter of the painting: 27,5 cm (11 inches). It is from the 1950s and in good condition.
Rèn Yí (Chinese: 任頤; 1840–1896), also known as Ren Bonian, was a painter and son of a rice merchant who supplemented his income by doing portraits. In Shanghai he became a member of the Shanghai School which fused popular and traditional styles. He is also sometimes referred to as one of the "Four Rens".
