An original Austrian Signum Memoriae Medal produced in 1898 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reign of Franz Josef I. This medal was issued to all members of the Austo-Hungarian forces on October 31 of that year. The medal was worn on different ribbons for the different branches of the military service. Unfortunately, the ribbon is no longer with this medal. It has a likeness of the Emperor on one side and on the reverse there is a rectangular plaque inscribed `SIGNUM MEMORIAE' (Token of remembrance)seated inside a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. It is dated MDCCCXLVIII – MDCCCXCVIII (1848 – 1898).
The medal is 1 1/2" (35mm) in diameter. It is bronze with a bronze bail for the ribbon; it may have been gilded at one time but the gilt has mostly worn off. There are some oxidized spots on the portrait side of the coin.
