Vintage Retro Modern Mid Century Modernist Made in Italy Italian 800 Silver Shell Cameo Link Bracelet
From Italy and dating to the 1950s or so, may I offer this link bracelet featuring grey shell (possibly abalone or mother of pearl) cameos (touching on a Roman design) bezel set with a gold twisted wire embellishment at the base. This bracelet was a common find in all the gift shops of Rome. Silver was cheaper than gold and the shell cameo used to make the panels was easy to carve. Although all the panels are HAND carved, the artisan was paid by the piece and so the "quality" of each cameo is not like that of a fine cameo. Still, when presented to a loved one back home in its original box, well it made for a very nice souvenir from Italy. Tongue in closure with a side safety latch.
Known as a seven day bracelet, the panel designs are all charioteers and include -
Monday - Diana, Goddess of the Hunt
Tuesday - Mars, God of War
Wednesday - Mercury, the Winged Messenger
Thursday - Jupiter, King of the Gods
Friday - Venus, Goddess of Love and Beauty
Saturday - Saturn, God of Agriculture
Sunday - Apollo, God of the Sun
Condition: Very nice with no problems I can spot but again, the carved panels ARE NOT first quality. The metal needs a bit more of a polish - the bracelet was positively black when I found.
Metal Content: 800 Silver with most likely a gold filled wire around the bezel.
Hallmarks: 800 on the tongue of the clasp.
Size: Length is 7-1/4" wearable. Width of the panels is 1/2".
Weight: 13.8 grams
Final Comments: After all these years, the bracelet is still a collectible piece of jewelry!
