Antique Victorian Hand Beaded Native American Oval Picture Frame
With a personalized inscription on the back cardboard may I offer this dated 1898 hand beaded, Indian beadwork oval picture frame. Bought as a souvenir on a reservation or along the side of a road, the beading is done with white and blue beads while the back covering is simply a piece of medium weight cardboard. There is a ring at the back of the board so that the piece can be hung on a wall.
Tribal Affiliation: In looking at other frames that are slightly similar, I would say that the piece is Sioux.
Condition: While the beaded frame is in very good condition (the beads are on wire), the back cardboard shows water damage and has been pried open along the side so that a picture might be inserted more easily. There is no glass and I think, in this day and age, a piece of clear plastic would be a better covering than glass - too much weight.
Size: Frame measures 4-3/4" wide x 6" high. Image size is about 3-1/2" x 4-3/4".
Final Comments: You just don't throw away something this old just because it doesn't have a photo anymore. Insert your own and make this piece a special one. After all, it's not often you find dated Native American beaded picture frames!
