Antique Hand Carved and Painted Santos Statue - Possibly Jesus of Nazareth
AGE: C.1900 or so
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Italy, South America or possibly the Philippines (Spanish Colonial period)
ITEM: A hand carved and hand painted Santos/Saint, which one I know not BUT definitely having the appearance of Jesus Christ. Having passed through the years, the gentle person has lost one arm and one hand. Dressed in robes with coloring along a draped sash, the statue has a pleasing appearance.
CONDITION: Old age has caused the Saint to suffer the indignities of losing a touch of paint here and there, some bits of wood and, it seems, limbs! The back of the statue has a split in the wood and you can see the original coloring of the wood in the seam. This piece would need be reglued back to the main portion. Overall, the piece has a great patina and would fit in well with any religious statue collection.
SIZE: The Santos stands 11-7/8" high and is 3-7/8" wide.
FINAL COMMENTS: The good ones are hard to find and this one has been in my personal collection for about 22 years now. Until a new home is found, I am content to live with this religious personage.
