Hard to Find Victorian 18K Gold Rock Crystal Pendant | Heart Shaped Locket
Dating anywhere from C.1830 to C.1880 may I offer this extremely special piece of jewelry. Made of a high carat yellow gold front and a rose gold back, this late Georgian to early Victorian rock crystal locket pendant is shaped like a heart and bears a lovers bow at the top. I'd say the only thing lacking is the original box!
The bale of this locket is something you might not have seen before - a pair of wire "arns" as opposed to the normal "loop" you normally see. It is completely original to the piece and the arms are meant to cling to a piece of velvet ribbon (velvet being the most popular neck material of the day). Now the bale can still be used for a heavy chain if desired, but I must admit, I have always liked the look of a pendant on a piece of black velvet! You see, in the old days, if you were rich, certainly you could afford a heavy gold chain, but if you weren't, you wore your pendants on a piece of ribbon. This way, you spent your money on what most counted - the pendant!
The locket has an easy open back - lift out the back rose gold frame and the single glass wafer falls out. Then you can insert a set of two pics - one to the front, one to the back or place a token to the front and a picture at the back. Whatever is put at the front will magnify greatly so you might have to experiment a bit to find the right item. In my first pic, I have only a piece of wallpaper on the inside so you see on;y the flash off the rock crystal and the way the stone has been cut - polished smooth into a THICK heart! Because the back plate is glass, any image you insert will show with no distortion. (The image I show in the locket is one of Queen Victoria's bridesmaids that I cut from a magazine).
All the original pearls at the top are present and have a nice lustre. Coloring is cream with almost a touch of mauve.
Rock Crystal is the stuff that makes up Pools of Light necklaces, so if you are fortunate enough to own a pools of light necklace with gold findings - what a drop this piece would make!
Condition: Excellent - perfect - pristine - beautiful. Need I go on?
Metal Content: The main portion of the locket tests as
Hallmarks: As is the norm with American Victorian pieces of jewelry, none. Metal was gently acid tested for content and held strong at 18K. The back rose gold frame held at 14K but faded at 18K so I think the content is more like 15K there.
Size: Massive at 2" x 1-1/8". The rock crystal heart alone measures 1-1/16" x 1".
Weight: 19.1 grams
Final Comments: Outstanding! One thing is for sure, the likes of this piece will not be seen again!
