Antique Victorian SILVER GILT Locket Pendant - Enamel, Vinaigrette, Pomander, STRAWBERRY
May I present the holy grail of charms. Okay, maybe the holy grail of pendants - you be the judge! Dating to the late 1800s (Victorian era) and made of silver with a yellow gold overlay (gilt vermeil), here's a bright red enamel strawberry with stem and leaves. Oh, but that's not it, no sir! Tip the stem of the fruit back ever so slightly to reveal an interior, a small interior that is currently holding the smallest piece of sponge. Now I thought about taking the sponge out but, there's the rub. It's original to the piece and in the taking out, it might shatter so, I left it in. But what I did do is insert a small pin to ascertain how deep the container is. Let's just say, it's pretty deep. The old sponge might still be fine for holding scent but I'd suggest removing it and placing new sponge on the inside so that YOUR scent can be put on the inside of this extra special piece.
Condition: Now I can't say it's 100% perfect. But I can say it's 98% perfect. And the reason why? Well, FIRST, while the red enamel is intact, deep and dark, it does show light wear to the surface AND there is one small chip just below one of the leaves (viewable only with a 10X loupe). If you want to make the piece completely perfect and add a bit of protection, I can offer up the name of my enamelist who will place a coat of clear COLD enamel over the piece and then, the charm WILL be perfect - with a nice overlay of clear to protect the original red enamel. SECOND, the very tip of the stem shows a bit of silver under the gold - this definitely indicates the top is silver gilt and not solid gold.
Metal Content: Well, it was definitely made in Europe - only the best enameling was done overseas. So, being European, the content could be anywhere from 800 to 970 silver.
Hallmarks: None. Not a one.
Size: Small at about 3/4" high (to top of stem) x 1/2" wide.
Weight: 3.1 grams
Final Comments: In doing a search on the Internet, I see 2 others - one on another website for $2295 and the other with no price - the pics are just on PINTEREST.
