Art Deco Vintage French Celluloid Religious Croix de Berceau Crib Cross Baby Shower Gift
From France and dating to the Art Deco (possibly later) period, may I off this celluloid Croix de Berceau (Crib Cross) for the Nursery. Of all the Croix de Berceau I have had - this HAS to be the largest one I have found to date! This religious decoration would have been presented to the newborn at the time of birth or christening or to the mother at a Baby Shower. It would have been placed at the head of, or on, the crib, protecting baby from any manner of harm. The cross is lightly grained to simulate the more expensive ivory pieces that most families could not afford to purchase - celluloid being the material of choice if one was of moderate means. The original ring at the top is intact. The cherub face is nicely detailed with the sweetest expression upon its face. Condition is very nice with just age related marks. One small pock mark at the bottom of the cross - possibly a test mark to make sure the piece was not genuine ivory. Coloring is consistent throughout.
Size: From top of ring (when up) to bottom measures 9"; width is 3-1/2". Thickness of the cross is 15/16".
Final Comments: Ready for a new home!
