ART NOUVEAU Painted Cast Iron Vanity Treasure Box - Hinged Lid - Cream with Florals
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST! May I offer….
AGE: C.1910 or so
ITEM: In a French Provincial (or Shabby Chic) style, here's an Art Nouveau cast iron treasure box - vanity box - lady's keeper - that, unlike it's plain gilt counterparts, is finished in a cream paint and decorated with all manner of flourishes as well as some lightly colored florals (with green leaves). The box has a hinged lid and stands on 4 splayed legs.
CONDITION: Excellent for its age. There's a bit of chippiness here and there but really not very much at all. Now, the inside lining was shattered beyond belief so I had to take it upon myself to create a new lining of satin. Because of this, the lid doesn't close quite flush (as yet) but with time, it will.
METAL CONTENT: Cast iron - a magnet DOES NOT stick!
HALLMARKS: None, which is unusual because most of these pieces were usually marked on the bottom.
SIZE: Stands about 4-1/8" high; length is about 4" at the top; width is 2-3/4" approx. Depth of the container is not very much, only about 1-1/2". This would certainly be a unique way to present an engagement ring!
FINAL COMMENTS: Check it out - you will see that the painted pieces like I am offering here don't come around too often! (Oh, and Gayle Green, who is also an antique dealer here on Ruby Lane has TWO painted cast iron picture frames with florals that almost match my treasure box - check it out!)
