Vintage SPANISH 14K Gold & Porcelain Enamel Religious Charm - Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Welcome to ROBINS NEST MIDWEST!
OLD STORE STOCK! What does this mean? Well, to a person who sells jewelry, it’s like finding a Holy Grail – store stock that was stored for so long that it was never offered to the public. This means, in some instances, that the original card, wrapping, packaging is present as well as the original sales price. I got lucky recently and came into such a collection of old store stock that listings beginning with this blurb have not seen the light of day in 50 – 60 – 70 years. First come, first served. May I offer now……
AGE: C.1950 or so
ITEM: From Spain, here's a very small religious pendant/medal of gold and porcelain enamel. The subject matter depicted at the front is Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The design applied was more than likely a black and white transfer and then hand painted with by hand. Reverse of the Medal proclaims Virgen del Socorro. This charm is the perfect size for a newborn baby - a gift upon baptism/christening or birthday!
CONDITION: Pristine and Brand New – well considering the piece NEVER sold in a store!
METAL CONTENT: 14K Gold
HALLMARKS: None - too small an area on the gold to stamp. Metal has been lightly acid tested for content (and it DID come with all the other charms I recently found).
SIZE: Not including the bale, about 5/16" high/wide
WEIGHT: .5 grams
PORCELAIN ENAMEL: Vitreous enamel, also called porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C (1,380 and 1,560 °F). The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal, or on glass or ceramics.
FINAL COMMENTS: I have this medal as well as one other - so if you want both, just let me know.
THE BLESSED IMAGE: Our Lady of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour) is a Roman Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary as represented in a celebrated 15th-century Byzantine icon.
The icon has been in Rome since 1499, and is permanently enshrined in the church of Sant'Alfonso di Liguori, where the official Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help text is prayed weekly. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, this artistic iconography is known as the Virgin of the Passion or Theotokos of the Passion due to the instruments of the Passion present on the image.
Due to the Redemptorist Priests, who had been appointed as both custodians and missionaries of this icon by Pope Pius IX in 1865, the image has become very popular among Roman Catholics in particular, and has been very much copied and reproduced. Modern reproductions are sometimes displayed in homes, business establishments, and public transportation.
